VCD burning?

I have indeed burned VCDs of my movies, so I shall attempt to help where I can...

VCDs are, essentially, MPEGs on a CD, but it's not enough just to slap MPEGs willy-nilly on a disc and bung it in your DVD player (as far as I know. I didn't say I was a techie, I just said I did it! ).

Ahead Software's NERO Burning ROM is a good place to start, as that can convert AVIs into MPEGS and make VCDs and SVCDs (Super VCDs. Much better quality, but can only store half as much on a disc & not all DVD players can play 'em). However, it can only deal with AVIs of one resolution and that resolution is quite large.

The thing I use is CeQuadrat's WinOnCD, which has a great VCD Wizard. It'll convert AVIs of any size and quality to VCD format (NTSC or PAL; you get the choice) and gives you the facility to put other non-MPEG files on the disc as well. For example, you could put the original AVIs on it as well, so people without a DVD/VCD player can view them on their PCs instead.

Hit shareware download sites (www.download.com & www.shareware.com) or even (whisper it) warez sites to look for the software. Or raid magazine cover CDs.

I hope this helps. It's a bit of a broad outline and I could get a bit more technical, but that requires wandering off and firing up another computer to get details. Let me know if you want specifics and I'll bung 'em in another post.

Has anyone transfered their movies to Video CD (VCD)? I was curious, because I have a CD burner and would be interested in doing this; what software do you need, what file type (avi, mpg...), etc.?

So do the ordinary VCDs work on most DVD players then? I've got a cheapo JMB (John Moores Business - Littlewoods own )

I have Nero, which does the business for my writer, and TMPGEnc (Tsunami's MPEG Encoder), which lets me convert to MPG at any resolution, but I'm not sure of the required specs. I tried it once, but onto a CDRW, which wouldn't read anyway.

I was going to mention TMPGEnc, but Curtin-Parloe beat me to it

Basically you take your exisiting video file (avi,mpeg) - then open it in TMPGEnc, locate the VCD config file, then press convert.... depending on how long your movie is, depends on how long it will take.

then once you've got your VCD compliant MPEG at the end... you open up Nero (or any other CD-Buring software with VCD on it)

at the end you should have a VCD! groovy...

Good site there, la. What it can't tell you about VCDs hasn't been thought of!

I had it as VCDHelper.com - same site.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about the config files! The other thing I've been using it for is shrinking down footage to fit on my 20Gig HD, so I've been grappling with it by hand - interlacing does your head in!

As far as I'm aware pretty much any DVD player will play VCD.
